The Indian automaker is working on a new electric hatchback, launching soon after the eVX
Maruti Suzuki India’s largest automaker is working on a new electric hatchback for the Indian market. The company plans to offer a range of electric vehicles in different price segments. With the launch of the new 4th-gen Swift, the automaker plans to launch a new electric hatch for its biggest market. Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to expand its electric portfolio in the country with the launch of a variety of EVs in different segments.
Starting with the upcoming eVX, the brand has stepped into the world of EVs, further expanding it by introducing a new electric hatchback in the market as a strategic move towards electrifying its portfolio. Maruti’s upcoming electric hatchback will take inspiration from the company’s eWX concept showcased back in the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. The automaker plans to achieve annual 10 lakh sales by 2030 from the current 7 lakh sales. With declining sales, the automaker’s YoY sales grew by 11.3% to 10.7 lakh units in FY24.
Maruti Suzuki’s Growth Story
Maruti Suzuki gained a 63% market share in the hatchback and sedan segment in FY24, despite decreasing sales. Over the past two years, the automaker has been developing and has consistently expanded its utility vehicle portfolio with the new Fronx, and the Brezza, resulting in the top-selling UV maker last year. Maruti plans to launch 6 more cars by 2030 as a part of its electric vehicle expansion.
Takeuchi also highlighted how customers are shifting towards cars from two-wheelers, resulting in increased sales which is a key factor. This rapid shift shows incredible opportunity in the growing segment, offering both practical and affordable mobility options from Maruti Suzuki.
Maruti will compete with cars such as the Tata Tiago EV, MG Comet EV, and the Citroen eC3 with its upcoming electric hatchback. Many reports suggest that Maruti’s upcoming EV hatchback will be based on the company’s WagonR and is expected to launch soon in India.
